Are the seasons really changing?
We have had another warm start to the year and Spring is showing with beautiful flowers poking through, but there is something special happening on the Farne Islands, with the early return of the Puffins to their breeding ground.
Last year they were first sighted on the 12th March and this year it is earlier with sightings being made by the boat companies operating out of Seahouses recently.
These little birds have got to be the cutest and funniest birds I’ve ever seen. I took my son last year on the boat trip and the two of us had the best day out ever. We floated past the seals bobbing around just off shore, then landed on one of the Islands run by the National Trust’s Rangers, then got close up to the Puffins in their natural habitat.
It is not just Puffins that nest on the Islands but a huge variety of birds and it’s a trip not to be missed when you visit our area.
There is a new team of Rangers in place who are training before the opening of the Islands on the 28th March.
Let’s hope the warm weather continues and leads to another successful breeding season for the Puffins. Last year the Islands were home to around 40,000 pairs of Puffins during Spring and Summer, providing an amazing experience for visitors.
If you’d like somewhere local to stay, then we’d love to arrange your accommodation in one of our gorgeous luxury log cabins, giving you the perfect base from which to explore all that Northumberland has to offer.
